Spatial Frequency Domain Imaging (SFDI): Quantifying Tissue Health through Non-Contact Optical Imaging
Speaker: Amaan Mazhar, PhD is a graduate of the Beckman Laser Institute at the University of
California, Irvine, one of the nation’s leading centers for translational biophotonics
research. His doctoral work focused on advancing Spatial Frequency Domain Imaging
(SFDI), a non-contact optical imaging technique that uses structured light to quantify
tissue optical properties and derive functional and structural biomarkers of tissue health.
Dr. Mazhar’s research helped bridge SFDI from bench to clinical application, building on
foundational patents developed at UC Irvine. These technologies have since been licensed
for commercial use, and Modulim, where Dr. Mazhar currently serves as CEO, is the
primary licensee driving clinical translation and real-world deployment of SFDI-based
solutions
